Use SSD as an External Storage

Just in case you have an older version laptop that just does not work anymore. You may be thinking of throwing it out. You just do not know what to do with it. It seems like such a waste to just through it in the garbage. You just may have to do so. But not all of it. How about you use the hard drive as an external storage? In this article we look at how to use hard drive as an external storage. Since, in a sense, this is relating to Windows you can find other Windows articles HERE! Before we head into it, let us just explain what is SSD as mentioned in the title of this article. SSD stands for Solid State Drive and you can read more about these types of Hard Drives HERE.

Laptop Hard Drive to Storage Device

Here is how to make full, new, use of your old laptop’s hard drive:

  • Get your laptop and remove the screws on the underside of the system
  • Remove the covering and locate your hard drive. This will be labeled and cannot be missed
  • simple remove any screws (if they are holding the hard drive down) and slide the hard drive from the Motherboard
  • Now that you have your hard drive out. You will need an external hard drive case – see below for a recommended product

Once you have your case you can connect your Hard Drive to it and begin formatting. Most of these cases are simple slide open and slide close option. Easy to connect and use. Formatting is a simple step that will get your Hard Drive ready for external Storage usage.

Here is an example of formatting being completed on a 500GB Hard Drive that was taken from a laptop system recently:
